We recently went on a beautiful fall walk with some friends at Beaver Brook. We ended up taking a rather short walk, but spend a few hours in the woods enjoying the sights, sounds, smells and of course, fresh air! The actual walk was short, but the kids got to explore a lot of nature and I think everyone had a good time!
My sweet Beth at the beginning of our hike.

I brought along a bucket for us to collect leaves. Clearly the kids preferred to collect something else!
Very early on in the trail, we came to our first water feature. A little brook. Thanks to all the fall rain, there was plenty of water flowing. The kids were watching it and throwing rocks and sticks into the water.
A little further along, we came to a bunch of different trees. We noticed the different bark on the trees, and that some trees had 'boo boos,' or missing bark spots. We also noticed that some trees had fallen over! After banging on the tall trees with a stick to make noise, the girls had a little rest on a log on the ground. I asked them to smile for me, and instead they shouted "stinky feet" and continued to shout at each other, giggling for a good long while!
Nora checked out a swampier water feature along the trail. She was really hoping to find some frogs or a snake.
Our final water feature - this one with a wooden bridge over it. This location on the trail proved to be a favorite. We spent a lot of time here!
Nora enjoyed tossing items into the river and watching them flow under the bridge. She also just like poking the water and watching the waves spread. Mostly, I think she wanted to make me nervous thinking she was going to fall in.
The kids emptied out the red bucket of rocks tossing them in and watching the splashes. Rocks, while making a very nice splash, are not otherwise exciting. I found a few pine cones and suggested that the kids try tossing those in. Wow! They float - and the current brings them under the bridge and down the stream. How fun! Now it was time to hunt for more pine cones and other things that might float. I found an interesting piece of tree bark, covered in lichen and suggested Nora put that in the water. She placed it into the water and gave it a poke with her stick. Look! A little boat floating away!
A few of the pinecones got stuck on a rock in the stream, so Nora pushed them along with her stick so they could continue to float away.
Beth tossed a big yellow leaf in the water. It was pretty fun to watch that float away too!
